The AP costs need to be rethought, perhaps. You can choose 2 during character creation: Perhaps it would be better to give melee weapons one extra square of reach? It's less than optimal or smart to put points into both Melee Weapons AND Martial Arts so you have to make a choice between them but they fill the same niche. Is this a design decision to encourage players to role-play a Wasteland Kung-Fu Master? Don't even get me started on how useless the knife knuckleduster is with its 4 AP attack cost that late in the game.Īnd what about Melee Weapons? They feel like a stylistic choice instead of a weapon class with their own flavour. You get better chances at critical hits than if you were using a knuckleduster or gauntlet due to more attacks with lower AP costs and multiple hits with each attack! Not to mention the base damage is similar! Alexander (A melee based character) in my party with a Battle Gauntlet does the same damage with a basic 3 AP cost attack that I do with a basic 2 AP cost "One-two punch".
Unlocking the 'Combo' (at 120 Martial Arts) and later on 'Hammer' and 'Roundhouse Kick' abilities (at 150) for your punches and kicks, coupled with the same or lower AP cost for striking (compared to Martial Arts weapons) makes it a no contest. Heck, even earlier than that you are probably better off using the basic knuckleduster instead of anything else. From my experience, once you put 120 skill points into Martial Arts you are better off using your bare fists and common kicks than any of the Martial Arts based weapons I've come across (so far the only one I haven't come across is the Boom Glove). I'm running a STR based character who is a hybrid between Automatics (for spraying down groups) and Martial Arts.
